North East Community Energy Network (NECEN)
Convened by Federal MP for Indi Cathy McGowan in 2016, a forum was held to provide local advice and to report progress of the renewable energy agenda in Indi. Attendees consisted of representatives from Indi Councils, community renewable energy groups and industry stakeholders who decided to continue working as an independent group.
Murrindindi Climate Network Inc was one of seven community energy groups across the North East, that attended a meeting on 26th March 2018 in Wangaratta to formalize a Community Energy Network.
Entitled the North East Community Energy Network, NECEN was founded to:
- Support the launch of a community energy retailer,
- Participate in renewable energy initiatives,
- Provide local vision, leadership, know how and effort to inspire collective action,
- Lobby government and local MPs,
- Apply for grant funding, and
- Form partnerships.
As of 2021, NECEN has expanded to 14 groups from all reaches of North East Victoria. The community energy retailer, Indigo Power, was launched in March 2020 with the help of all these groups.
